DEPUTY MITCHELL ACHADO DEPUTY MITCHELL MACHADO In the midst of fire and explosion from a deadly helicopter crash, Deputy Mitchell Machado ran into the burning apartment building, responding with extreme courage to prevent further loss of life. CO FIREFIGHTER/PARAMEDIC ALLEN KASPER Without hesitation, Firefighter/Paramedic Allen Kasper plunged into treacherous waters to reach a 14-year-old girl caught in a powerful rip current, risking his life in a heroic rescue effort. SHERIFF'S DEPUTY JOSEPH SHERBO DEPUTY RICHARD DELGAUDIO SERGEANT NOEL MERCADO In the face of echoing gunfire, Sergeant Noel Mercado, Deputy Joseph Sherbo and Deputy Richard Delgaudio demonstrated valiant bravery, confronting the armed shooter and neutralizing the threat, saving many lives. UNDERSTANDING BSO'S HIGHEST HONORS Since 2019, Sheriff Dr. Tony has awarded some of BSO's highest honors. These accolades reflect BSO's vision of Excellence in Service and stand as a testament to public safety in Broward County. 20 Medal of Honor Awards Awarded to those who demonstrate gallantry by placing their lives at imminent risk. 38 Gold Cross Awards Issued for heroism in combat with an armed or violent subject, involving significant risk of injury. 2 Silver Cross Awards Awarded to those who suffered physical injury while confronting a violent adversary. 271 Lifesaving Awards Presented for deliberate, extraordinary action that directly sustained or saved a human life.
